FIFA World Cup history: Most World Cup titles, winners, runner-ups, Golden Ball recipients, and awards
The first official World Cup was played in Uruguay in 1930, and since then the tournament has been held every fourth year. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is the 22nd edition of the quadrennial tournament. It also marks the first time that an Arab country is hosting the Football World Cup. A total of 32 teams will be participating in the event.
The world regions have been divided into six confederations: Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Union des Associations Européennes de Football (UEFA), The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), and Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CONMEBOL).
Today there are 211 national associations included in the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the world governing body of the sport.

This year Argentina won the FIFA World Cup 2022 final in Qatar, 4-2 on penalties.
The first edition was held back in 1930. Thirteen teams took part in that tournament and it has since expanded to 32 teams, with the 2026 edition set to be contested by 48 nations.

Golden, Silver, and Bronze Boots awards
The Golden Boot will be awarded to the player who scores the most goals in the final competition. If two or more players score the same number of goals, the number of assists shall be decisive. Silver and Bronze boots will also be awarded to the second and third-highest goalscorers respectively.
