This is the first test of the four-test series. Australia won the toss and decided to bat first, but the Australian batsmen failed completely.

Earlier, Australia had chosen to bat first and could collect only 177 runs on the board in the first innings. In response, team India scored a century in the first innings with the help of captain Rohit Sharma’s strong century, Ravindra Jadeja (70), and Akshar Patel (84). India made a competitive score of 400 runs.

In the first innings, India had given Australia a lead of 233 runs, in response Australia’s team was able to score only 91 runs in the second innings after being caught in the trap of Indian spinners. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took eight wickets with 23 runs. Ravindra Jadeja was adjudged the player of the match, he has made a comeback after almost five months. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took five wickets in the first innings and two wickets in the second innings. He also scored 70 runs. Shami played a superb cameo. For the Australian side, off-spinner Todd Murphy was the pick of the bowlers with 7/124.

Twenty-seven test series have been played between India and Australia so far, out of which Australia has won twelve and India has won ten test series. Five series are being drawn. So far 102 test matches have been played between the two countries in which Australia has won 43 and India has won 30 tests. There have been 28 matches in which the decision of winning or losing could not be made, that is, there have been draws and one test match has been tied. India has defeated Australia thrice in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Australia is currently in the first position in the ICC test rankings, if the Indian team defeats Australia in this test series, then it will move to the No.1 position in the ICC Test rankings. The Indian team is currently at No.1 in the ODI and T-20 world rankings. If the Indian team also achieves the No.1 position in tests, then it will be the second such team in history, which will reach the top of the ICC rankings in all three formats simultaneously.

The second test match is to be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi from 17 February 2023 to 21 February.

Afterward, the third test of the series will be held at Holkar Stadium, Indore on March 01 to March 05. Recently BCCI has shifted the venue (Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala) for the third test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
