In the second Test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series between India and England, India defeated England by 336 runs. India has levelled this five-test series going on in Birmingham, England, 1-1. Today, Sunday, was the fifth and last day of this match at the packed Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
In this second match of the Test series, India had given England a target of 608 runs to win. While chasing, the entire England team was all out after scoring 271 runs. Due to rain in Birmingham, the fifth day’s play started with a delay of 1 hour and 40 minutes. 80 overs were to be bowled on this fifth and last day of the Test match.
For India, fast bowler Akash Deep gave a career-best performance and took six wickets in the second innings. Akash had taken four wickets in the first innings. Apart from Akash, Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar got one wicket each.

India had scored a total of 607 runs with a lead of 180 runs based on the first innings and gave England a big target of 608 runs. After losing the toss and batting first, the Indian team scored a huge score of 587 runs in its first innings. Captain Shubman Gill scored 269 runs, which is the highest Test score of his career, in which he hit 30 fours and 3 sixes. During this, he faced 387 balls. At the same time, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 87 runs, and Ravindra Jadeja scored 89 runs. Spinner Shoaib Bashir took a maximum of 3 wickets for England.
England’s first innings
In reply, England also batted well and scored 407 runs in the first innings. Wicketkeeper batsman Jamie Smith batted brilliantly and scored an unbeaten 184 runs off 207 balls, which included 21 fours and four sixes. On the other hand, Harry Brook played a brilliant innings of 158 runs off 234 balls. Brook hit 17 fours and a six in his innings. Smith, along with Brook, made a partnership of 303 runs for the sixth wicket. For India, fast bowlers Mohammad Siraj took 6 wickets and Akash Deep took 4 wickets; no other bowler got a wicket.
India’s second innings
The Indian team declared their second innings at 427 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Captain Shubman Gill also scored a century in the second innings. Shubman scored 161 runs off 162 balls, which included 13 fours and 8 sixes, while Ravindra Jadeja returned unbeaten on 69 runs (118 balls, 5 fours, and a six). KL Rahul (55 runs) and Rishabh Pant (65 runs) also played brilliant innings.
England’s second innings
When India declared the innings on the fourth day, England had a bad start while chasing the huge target of 608 runs, and they lost three wickets for just 50 runs. Mohammad Siraj dismissed Jack Crowley for zero. At the same time, Akash Deep bowled brilliantly and dismissed Ben Duckett for 25 runs and Joe Root for 6 runs. After this, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook did not let England suffer any further loss on the fourth day (July 5).
In the match, which started late due to rain on the fifth and final day (July 6), Akash Deep bowled England’s fourth wicket by clean bowling the previous day’s batsman, Ollie Pope, for 24 runs and got the fifth wicket by dismissing Harry Brook for just 23 runs.
After the dismissal of Horry Brook, England captain Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith tried to handle England by making a crucial partnership of 70 runs for the sixth wicket, but Washington Sundar broke this partnership by dismissing Ben Stokes just before lunch.
After lunch, Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes troubled the Indian bowlers a bit with a small partnership in the second session, but Prasidh Krishna broke this partnership by taking the first wicket of the match. After this, India took the remaining three wickets and won the match by a big margin.
